Toronto lets you put in a skylight without a permit if the opening removes no more than one rafter — but not if your roof is built with trusses. Vaughan wants stamped drawings. How much does it cost to put a skylight in?
For a deck-mounted skylight, budget about $4,000 to $5,000 for cutting the opening, framing it, flashing it and finishing the shaft inside — plus the cost of the skylight unit itself. A deeper attic means a deeper shaft and more finishing work.
Do I need a permit for a skylight in Toronto?
The City of Toronto's own no-permit list exempts installing a skylight in a house of three storeys or fewer where the work removes no more than one rafter or joist — trusses excepted. If your roof is built with engineered trusses, or the opening needs more than one member cut, you need a permit. More on Toronto rules.
Do you subcontract the skylight work?
No. We are VELUX certified installers and we do the roofing ourselves, so the opening, the curb, the flashing, the shingles and the interior finishing are all one crew's responsibility and one line on your estimate.
Is the tool free? Will someone call me?
The tool is free and asks for nothing. You only give us your name and email if you choose to send yourself a copy. Nobody calls you unless you ask.
How long does a roof take?
Most detached homes are one to two days for a straight re-shingle. A skylight added at the same time usually adds a day, plus a return visit for the interior finishing once the drywall has set.
